About Baytown

With a population of more than 77,000, Baytown, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Those who live and work in Baytown will find an area rich in history, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities due to its proximity to scenic waterways, namely Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou.

Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing

sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.

Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.

The Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which makes the plants and products more efficient as we develop technologies to make cleaner fuels and work together to operate more safely and reliably.

What role you will play in our team

• The Technician is tasked with providing detailed testing results to support the advancement of Polyolefin and Specialty Product Development and External Customer Support. Our lab is the sole customer support lab for North and Latin America for these products.
• Testing Technician Performs Properties\mechanical testing associated with plastic resins, films, and molded parts (Tensile/Secant, Hot Tack, Dart, Puncture, Tear, MI, Density, COF, OTR, WVTR, Heat Sealing)
• BTEC operations has a variety of schedules including rotating 4 x 10-hr schedule, and 5 days 8-hr schedules.
• New hires are expected to work any of the schedules depending on business needs.

What you will do

• Performs Properties\mechanical testing associated with plastic resins, films, and molded parts (Tensile/Secant, Hot Tack, Dart, Puncture, Tear, MI, Density, COF, OTR, WVTR, Heat Sealing)
• Interfaces with internal customers (professional PhDs and Engineers) on a daily basis.
• Maintains analytical and physical properties testing equipment
• Ensures data reliability through adherence to quality objectives and develops all method support documentation such as SOPs. 
• Safety minded – strong willingness to use Exxon’s safety tools to improve personnel and process safety safeguards
• Prepares and tests samples by following detailed ASTM methods to provide high quality data
• Calculates, analyzes and interprets data
• Loads data to the digital lab management system
• Efficiently manages their work request backlog, manages priority and turnaround time
• Performs methods development work as needed for product development
• Solves analytical problems and leads efforts to introduce new technologies to support the business 
• Stewards third party instrument calibrations and performs equipment verifications 
• Performs internal calibrations and monitoring SQC charts for quality compliance
• Manages sample inventory, handling, shipping, storage, and disposal

Work Environment 

• Works around moving machines or equipment
• Works, manages and safely disposes of lab chemicals as needed
• Able to safely walk on irregular surfaces
• Work alone without Supervision or in a large team setting
• Wear PPE such as safety glasses and steel-toe boots. 
• Could work in a high noise environment of over 85 decibels – proper PPE provided
  
   

About you

Skills and Qualifications

• Able to stand and or walk for most of the workday. Able to climb stairs.
• Occasional ladder use
• Frequent pushing/pulling/carrying of parts, heavy resin or equipment
• Occasionally lift and carry 50lbs when the need arises
• Occasionally turn valves on equipment
• Can communicate in high noise environments
• Kneels, crawls, bends on occasion depending on specific tasks
• Frequent stooping or squatting
• Works above shoulder height for less than an hour per day
• Ability to use hands for lab activities or typing

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a Chemistry, Science, Engineering discipline, or relevant equivalent work experience
• Capable of safe, reliable, and independent laboratory work given review of literature, framing of problem, and regular direction.
• Ability to learn new techniques and software as needed.
• Ability to read and follow detailed instructions.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Concern for accuracy and precision.
• Strong working knowledge of Excel and Word and the ability to use new computer software. 
• Excellent communication (written/oral) and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to resolve conflict constructively
