Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Wisconsin State Fair Park Police Department Dispatcher performs a full range of telephone and radio operational duties. The police dispatcher is the first line of communication a caller has and plays a key role in ensuring emergency personnel respond appropriately to a scene.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE
This position is an unclassified, Limited Term Employment (LTE) position within the State of Wisconsin employment system. Annual hours worked in this position will not exceed 1039 hours.

COMPENSATION
The starting wage for this role will be $18.50 per hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Answers the phone and talks with callers in order to determine the nature of a particular emergency
  • Decides on a plan of action and summons officers to react
  • Coordinates the efforts of officers while in route to the scene
  • Calms and reassures people who are waiting on emergency services
  • Records/documents information relating to a particular incident for possible use of later investigations
  • Advises individuals of certain actions to take while waiting for help to arrive
  • Contacts other agencies if additional assistance is needed by order of supervisory staff
  • Communicates with officers on scene in order to ensure that a situation or incident is fully resolved
  • Tracks the location of officers responding to a particular call/incident
  • Answers non-emergency call for assistance
  • Receives requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, provides pertinent data
  • Operates a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems
  • Monitors and operates multiple police radio frequencies
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Have the capacity to meet certification requirements as a TIME system operator
  • Ability to remain calm while under extreme pressure
  • Ability to direct others and provide sound guidance
  • Understands basic police responses to an emergency scene
  • Knowledge of computer systems (Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, other computer databases, etc)
  • Knowledge of security camera systems
  • Knowledge of an emergency or service dispatch center
  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment

SPECIAL NOTES
The candidate must be able to work all 11 days of the annual Wisconsin State Fair. Prior to appointment to this position, the candidate will be subject to a comprehensive criminal background check. Subsequent background checks will be conducted on an annual basis.
